Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, sits off the mainland on an island in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf.
"Dhabi" is the Arabic name of a particular species of native gazelle that was once common in the Arabian region. Abu Dhabi means father of "Dhabi" (gazelle). It is thought that this name came about because of the abundance of gazelles in the area, and a folk tale involving Shakhbut bin Dhiyab al Nahyan.
Its focus on oil exports and commerce is reflected by the skyline’s modern towers, adventure parks and shopping mega centers. Beneath white-marble domes, the vast Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque features an immense Persian carpet, crystal chandeliers and capacity for 41,000 worshipers.
